Possibly 5th century, this badly damaged and eroded stone lies embedded in a wall within the “The King George V Memorial Plantation” opposite ASDA and Jewsons. The faint inscription with wheel cross at the top, obscured by lichen and very worn, can be read across the stone. It probably reads HIC PA/CE NUP(er)/ REQUIEVIT/ CVNAIDE/ HIC(IN)/ TUMULO/ IACIT/ VIXIT/ ANNOS/ XXXIII. Here in peace lately went to rest Cunaide. Here in the grave she lies. She lived 33 years. (according to Prof Charles Thomas in his 1994 book ‘And Shall These Mute Stones Speak?”)
