Found in the River Wear, Durham City DURMA.2002.1.36
Lead was commonly used in rituals throughout Europe. During the medieval period, pagan rituals became interwoven with Christianity. This folded lead tablet bears three shallowly carved lines above an inscribed M or W, which may possibly stand for the Virgin Mary. This tablet was found near Elvet Bridge, where three chapels stood. It is likely that this lead tablet also contains a personal curse or invocation.”
