Cwmbyr Lead Mine is located at the head of the Nant Cwmbyr valley near Aberhosan, Powys. The mine was badly damaged by the building of a forestry access track and deep ploughing for conifer planting in the 1970’s. Since 2010 the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust http://welshminestrust.org have been carrying out research excavations here which have revealed some of the best preserved timber dressing floors to be found in the whole of Mid Wales.

The mine developed from about 1860 through to 1887. After that it remained abandoned until in the 1930s a sale of what was left took place. The mine produced 476.8 tons of lead concentrates, 816.7 tons of zinc ore and 218 ounces of silver during its working life.
