A Bichrome Ware Cypriot jar dating to the Cypro-Archaic period, 750-600 BCE.
The rim of the wide mouth is painted with bands, continuing on to the shoulder. The twin vertical double ribbed handles are painted with stripes and horizontal lines, above a series of horizontal lines and bands overlapped by a frieze of alternating red and black vertical crossed staffs on the body. There is a wavy band below, and a single band on the lower body. The jar has a height of 325mm.
The jar is on display as part of the ‘Cypriot Pottery of the Bronze and Iron Ages’ exhibition of the Hellenic Museum of Melbourne, and is on loan from the Peter Mitrakas and Mary Ann Savas collection.
