A Bichrome Ware Cypriot neck amphora dating to the Cypro-Geometric or Cypro-Archaic period, 1050-600 BCE.
The rim of the amphora is painted black, with a horizontal line around the interior. The neck is centered with a wavy line between horizontal lines, two red bands, and a black band at bottom. The shoulder is decorated with two red horizontal lines above a set of black lines within two bands. The painted horizontal twin loop handles feature a frieze of three concentric circles on each side, over a set of horizontal lines with bands, and the lower body displays two horizontal red lines, and a single black band below. The amphora has a height of 445mm.
The amphora is on display as part of the ‘Cypriot Pottery of the Bronze and Iron Ages’ exhibition of the Hellenic Museum of Melbourne, and is on loan from the Peter Mitrakas and Mary Ann Savas collection.
