More model informationDatun Temple - is a Christian church, a monument of medieval architecture, located in the Shamil district of Dagestan Republic, Russia. An object of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation of federal significance. The church is located in Khatan Bugeb-Kkal gorge (translated from the Avar language means “Sunday Gorge”) near the village Datuna of Shamil district. The church was built by Georgian missionaries presumably in the late X - early XI centuries. It was abandoned in XIII century, and functioned again for a short period of time in XIX century. During the Caucasian War of 1817-1864 the church was given to Russian soldiers who defected to Imam Shamil. It is not functioning at present.
