Opis: Metuljnik je do 4 m visok listopadni grm s suličastimi in po robu nazobčanimi nasprotno razvrščenimi listi. Po spodnji strani so listi sivkasti zaradi gosto nameščenih zvezdastih laskov. Cvetovi so nameščeni v dolgih, gostih, latastih socvetjih na koncu enoletnih vej. Venec je cevast, vijoličast (lahko tudi rožnat, rdeč, bel, modrovijoličast). Cvetovi privabljajo metulje. Plodovi so mnogosemenske glavice, ki ostanejo na rastlini in iz njih se semena sproščajo še vso zimo.
Čas cvetenja: julij–avgust.
Zrelost semen: od septembra naprej.
Razmnoževanje in razširjanje: Razmnožuje se s semeni, ki se pozno jeseni in pozimi sproščajo iz plodov. Vegetativno se razmnožuje z ukoreninjanjem poganjkov. Za preprečevanje razmnoževanja s semeni je treba porezati socvetja takoj po odcvetu.
Rastišča: Okrasni grm, ki pogosto podivja. Naseli se na toplih suhih rastiščih, kot so skalne razpoke, cestni robovi, ruševine, gramoznice, peskokopi.
