DeepPIV 3DR – Bathochordaeus stygius larvacean3D Model
Animated three-dimensional reconstruction (3DR) of a giant larvacean (Bathochordaeus stygius) found in Monterey Bay, CA, USA (lat 36.7015, long -122.0538) at a depth of 230 meters during a 2015 MBARI Midwater Ecology and Bioinspiration Lab cruise. A new study published in the journal Nature describes a laser-based system for constructing 3D models of gelatinous animals and the diaphanous mucus structures they secrete. The 3DR model was created by using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Rachel Carson mounted to ROV MiniROV. The animated model was made in collaboration with the Digital Life Project at UMass Amherst.
