This tunicate (Doliolina sp.) was live-scanned at 561 meters deep off the coast of San Diego, using MBARI’s laser-based scanning instrument DeepPIV mounted to ROV SuBastian. This data was collected during the “Designing the Future 2” expedition aboard R/V Falkor, operated by Schmidt Ocean Institute. This expedition was a collaborative effort of scientists and engineers from the University of Rhode Island, Harvard University, and the City University of New York, and MBARI’s Bioinspiration Lab.
The DeepPIV camera records a laser-illuminated slice in each frame. Images were then segmented and models generated in 3D Slicer. The monochromatic image data is used to create a 3D reconstruction, which is colorized based on ROV 4K video.
