A metal instrument used to operate a lock mechanism. In addition to the history of locks, keys dating from the 2nd millennium BC have been found in Iran, New Guinea, Morocco, India, Africa and China. The keys to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem have been entrusted to two Muslim families since the reign of Saladin in the 11th century.
