The literal translation for Dhagaxtuur is “Stone throwing.” The monument symbolizes the struggle for independence from the colonial occupation. Protesters were throwing stones at the British forces, demanding that Italy not be given the trusteeship Somalia during the 10 year transition period to independence. Two protesters were killed by the British.
This is part of an ongoing project looking at some of the most important buildings in Mogadishu. These buildings stood still during the war and have now turned into some of the buildings have now turned into well-known ruins within the city.
