An Australian sauropod walks again?! Diamantinasaurus matildae (Named after ‘Waltzing Matilda’, which was written in the same town it was found) was a large somphospondylan sauropod from the Late Cretaceous Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia (101-94 million years ago).
This 3D skeletal reconstruction was created by Astrid O’Connor in Blender (v3.4) in collaboration with Dr Stephen Poropat and Sam Beeston. This specimen is based and scaled largely on the newly described specimen ‘Judy’ (AODF 0888; AODL 0246) (see Poropat et al. 2025 Current Biology) with missing bones scaled from other referred specimens. The cranium is largely based on specimens AODF 0906 & AODF 0836.
We greatly thank Steve and Sam for their skeletal insights and for the many wonderful bone surface scans made avilable through Morphosource.
