Diffwys Quarry Floor 6 Winding House3D Model
Diffwys Slate Quarry (CN413, PRN20305), part of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales WHS, is located NE of Blaenau Ffestiniog. It opened in the 1760s and was the first formalised quarry in the town and the first to export slate to markets beyond North Wales. The company that owned it was declared bankrupt in 1892 though small-scale extraction continued until 1925.
On ‘Floor 6’, a small incline winding house (PRN60264, PRN60265) comprising a drum house with an adjacent electric motor room and weighbridge, is located 11m to the north of the longitudinal mill (PRN60258). This would have been utilised to raise slate blocks from the lower levels of the quarry to the mill. It is a later building than the mill, possibly dating to around 1913. Prior to this, the incline was likely to have been powered directly from the mill’s steam engine.
The winding house and mill were recorded on behalf of Cadw as part of condition monitoring works in 03/24.
