Visual art used to be dominated by paint, pencils and ink. But computers and other technologies have become just as important. These tools and the Internet make it possible for people to create and share new art forms. Artists can collaborate, download and remix each other’s work. But new questions emerge, especially about what defines or gives value to art. Is a flatlay on Instagram art? Is an AI painting art? And what makes it valuable? Is it beauty…or rarity? Recently, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have become popular. Digital art is being stored as NFTs in the blockchain. NFT artworks have sold for millions of dollars as they are unique, authenticated and cannot be forged.
But most importantly, new technologies enable previously excluded populations to participate. The artist of this object, Elmer, was paralysed in a car crash decades ago. But because of tech advancements, he can continue his passion. He makes digital art by using Photoshop, a rollerball mouse and a keyboard he controls with his glasses.
