The Basilica of St. Peter, built from 1619 by the Graubünden master builder Hans Alberthal with the claim of a “substitute cathedral” for the bishopric of Augsburg, is one of the most ambitious as well as problematic sacred buildings of the late Renaissance north of the Alps. Constructional difficulties already arose during the building process - the roof was secured at great expense immediately after completion. The construction history of the Basilica thus presents itself as a sequence of repair measures.
