More model informationLocality: Romania
Size: 10 cm x 9 cm x 4 cm
Type: Igneous intrusive (plutonic) rock
Description: Phaneritic granular rock composed of essential sodic-plagioclase (usually oligoclase or andesine) and usually a mafic such as hornblende, or more rarely, biotite and/or pyroxene. From Gk. diorizein, to distinguish; because essential minerals are megascopic. According to IUGS, diorite is a plutonic rock with 0-5 Q, P/(A + P) greater than 90%, and plagioclase more sodic than An50.
Essential minerals: plagioclase, hornblende, pyroxene, biotite.
Accessory minerals: magnetite, ilmenite, apatite, rutile, zircon, orthoclase, etc.
