Dolphin binnacle support from the SS Faith3D ModelNoAI
This decorative dolphin binnacle support is from the wreck of the SS Faith. A binnacle is a stand or case on the desk of a ship which houses navigational instruments. This Turkish cargo vessel sprung a leak and sank in bad weather off the Isle Of Wight in 1855.
Constructed in 1852, the Faith had previously served as a troopship for the Crimean War, and was powered by both steam and sail. It comes from a period of signigicant technological change as shipping progressed from sail to steam. The site has been scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act due to its importance.
The real artefact is on display at the Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum on the Isle of Wight, UK.
This model was produced as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Fathoming the Future project. Find out more about the project here.
