The Ancient Tree Forum field meeting under the ancient Doomsday Oak.
The Domesday Oak, ~ 700 yrs old, has lived through hundreds of years of human history, looking over Bristol through the reformation, civil war, industrial revolution & more. It’s named after Ashton Court’s mention in William the Conqueror’s Domesday book of 1086, drawn up to describe in detail the landholdings & resources of late 11th century England. There are ~500 notable trees in Ashton Court, Bristol’s Domesday Oak forms part of the largest cluster of ancient oaks in the country outside of Windsor Great Park.
The SCATTER project was funded by the Woodland Trust & carried out by researchers from UCL with logistical support & ancient oak expertise from The Ancient Tree Forum.
When visiting ancient trees, please be respectful to these living legends and their custodians.
