This beautiful domino is unusual in that it is from either a double nine or double twelve set, instead of the more usual double six. Dominoes would have been a popular game, particularly amongst the soldiers and sailors on board the Abergavenny. Invented in China in the eleventh or twelfth century, the game was introduced to Britain in the 18th century, probably by French prisoners of war. It quickly became popular in taverns where larger sets, double nines or twelves, would have allowed more people to play.
