This oak doorway was the entrance to Spicer’s Hall, a medieval merchant’s town house on Welsh Back, by Bristol Bridge. Richard Spicer was MP for Bristol in 1355 and three times mayor. He Bequeathed his home to the Mayor and Corporation of Bristol in 1377 and from 1459 it was used to store goods imported into the sity by non-Bristolians, prior to sale.
The front of the building was demolished in 1885 for improvements to Welsh Back, and this oak door and porch was removed.
