Egypt (Karnak, Temple of Amun)
Dynasty 19, reign of Ramesses II, 1279–1212 BC
Gift of heirs of John Lowell
Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East 1916.3.1
Sandstone
Pharaoh Ramesses II stands before the goddess Rattawy, who is crowned with the moon disk atop a pair of bull’s horns. She hands the king an ankh, the symbol of life. This relief was once part of a doorway near the Fourth Pylon (or gateway) of the Great Temple of Amun at Karnak. Bostonian John Lowell purchased these three fragments in Egypt in 1836. In 1878 Lowell’s heirs donated the relief to Harvard’s Peabody Museum, which transferred it to the Semitic Museum in 1916.
