Doris Miller (b. 12 October 1919 in Texas, d. 24 November 1943 off the coast of the Gilbert Islands), American sailor. He rendered meritorious service during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, helping the wounded and operating a Browning .50 caliber machine gun, for which he was not trained; he was firing until the ammunition ran out, and the ship began to go down. He was awarded the United States Navy’s highest military decoration, the Navy Cross. He was the first Black sailor to receive this decoration.

Miller was killed on 24 November 1943, when a Japanese torpedo sank the escort carrier Liscome Bay off the coast of Butaritari Atoll in the Gilbert Islands.
