More model informationDr Alexander Thomson (1801-1866) was the first mayor of Geelong when the council was founded in 1850. He was a prominent local citizen, having settled in the area in 1841 and was elected for Geelong to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1852-54 and to the Legislative Assembly in 1857-59. His interests varied, from exploration of the local area, local Presbyterian Church development, and appointed director of the Geelong-Melbourne Railway Company.
Dr Thomson died in 1866 and is buried at Geelong Eastern Cemetery. This sculpture is a reminder of one of Geelong’s pioneers.
Created by C (Charles) Summers of Melbourne in 1857.
