More model informationOne of a series of five foliate and grotesque bosses at the intersections of the three-bay quadripartite ribbed timber vault of the South Nave Transept of Rochester Cathedral. The boss depicts a dragon grotesque with acanthus-leaf foliation possibly flowing from the mouth. McAleer (1996, 260-261) dates the style of the bosses to around c.1340, although Alexander (2006, 162) dates the vaulting to shortly after the c.1240 completion of the transept. The bosses have been repainted and gilded, possibly during the c.1875 restoration of the south nave transept by Sir George Gilbert Scott (DRc/Emf/65/3).
