Drug therapy for asthma and COPD has two primary aims - relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, and reducing inflammation. Additionally, management of COPD includes efforts to reduce risk (e.g. smoking cessation, getting a flu vaccine), prevent infections (antibiotics), clear mucus (mucolytic agents), and control coughing (antitussives).
