Changing sea levels over the last millennium have caused the broch at Dun Vulan to be a shoreline site, rather than the islet site it was before the creation of Bornish Bay.
Although little more than a ruin today, the original structure was perhaps 13 metres high - today’s apparent ground floor is, in fact, the original first floor level, the entry-way ‘floor’ are the original roof lintels of the entranceway.
On at least two occasions, mitigation measures have been put in place to try to protect the monument from tidal damage, once in the late 1990s when the concrete skirt was created and a newer addition of gabions (in 2019) to try to give protection fom the outflanking currents and storm surges.
At some stage, the monument will be overtaken by the Atlantic, so enjoy it while you can!
