Dunfierth Tomb Panels - North (KD004-005002-)3D ModelNoAI
These side panels belong to a dismantled tomb-chest commemorating Sir Walter Bermingham who died in 1548. The fragments are located in the ruined medieval parish church of Dunfierth, Co. Kildare. They have been incorporated into the outer walls of a burial vault built by the Hamilton family in the early-19th century. The two side panels represent the twelve apostles. This panel is presently embedded in the north wall of the vault and represents St James, St Thomas, St Bartholomew, St Phillip, and St Simon. The St James figure is severely damaged - its head is embedded in the internal wall of the vault. The south wall holds another panel with the remaining apostles, and a crucifixion scene is embedded in the west wall. Internally, the Hamilton family have appropriated the mensa slab, with the effigy of Sir Walter Bermingham, as a decorative feature in the vault.
Sir Walter Birmingham, Knight, was created Baron Carbury in 1541, and his first wife was Rose FitzGerald, daughter of Gerald, Earl of Kildare.
