Melencolia I is one of the best-known works of the Northern Renaissance with unusual symbolism: “One might speculate that the cube represents masculinity and truncating one in an upright position may have some Freudian symbolism.” (Georg Hart) According to another theory it represent the wrong crystal of calcite. A systematic mathematical description of crystals begins only in the 17th century, so this theory comes at least 100 years too late. In the past the calcit was used for treating melancholia.
