This artifact is a Daravati grey stone Buddha torso made in Thailand around the 7th - 8th century. Although the true purpose of this statue is unkown, statues such as this were placed in temples for worship as memoirs for various Buddhist stories and proverbs.
This artifact is part of the the collection of Asian + South East Asian works of art that were personally owned by John Young and then later donated to the John Young Museum of Art in 1999.
The John Young Museum is a learning learning complex on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus.
“The museum is a venue for Asian-Pacific artist-in-residences, art history exhibitions, and students centered programming that promote, support, and sustain museum education initiatives for UHM and the local community.”
