More model information

The Dwarfie Stane is located below the dramatic cliffs of the Dwarfie Hamars on Hoy, Orkney. This massive rectangular block of Old Red Sandstone, which measures 8.6 metres long, by 4 metres wide and up to 2.5 metres high, was moved into its current position by a glacier in the last ice age. A 1m high passage with two sides cells has been cut into the stone; one of the cells has a ‘pillow’ that is covered with 18th and 19th century graffiti. This tomb is unique, but it is though to be prehistoric, probably Neolithic; Audrey Henshall considers it to be part of the Bookan sub-group of Orkney-Cromarty chambered cairns.
