after Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 –1564); Slave for the Tomb of Pope Julius II; Master model, 1933; Plaster, shellacked; Height: 215 cm; Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Gipsformerei, R-02169 (Original: 1513 – 1516, Musée du Louvre)
The model of Michelangelo’s Dying Slave probably arrived at the Gipsformerei in one piece. It likely came from Paris: the casting mark on the counterpart ‘Rebellious Slave’ points to the Parisian Atelier de moulage. To create the mould the cast had to be cut into manageable pieces. It has obviously been reassembled for exhibition purposes in the past, as proven by its homogeneous grey coating, which was carefully removed during the restoration work undertaken for this exhibition.
