Dzedzvebi, Grave 6 3D Model
Grave 6 from Dzedzvebi, Georgia.
The grave was uncovered during the 2011 field campaign - as so often in archaeology, purely by chance! The grave is located near the already excavated cemeterary of Dzedzvebi and was lying just below the ground level of the dirt road used to access the other archaeological sites on the plateau. When first parts of the grave showed up, we decided to excavate the whole structure in order to prevent any damage to this outstanding feature.
The grave dates to the Bronze Age Kura-Araxes period (ca. 5000 years BP) and illustrates the funerary practices of this time. The main burial is that of a male individual laid down in a contracted pose. Anthropological and archaeological research allows us to gain a lively picture of this individual.
Multiple burials were uncovered next to the male individual. Some of the excavated bones belong to children and we found out that the remains of at least four other individuals, along with corresponding grave goods, were buried in Grave 6.
