A special feature from Dzedzvebi, Georgia.

In area II.7 we discovered a special feature that was excavated during the 2014 and 2015 field campaigns. The round stone structure and the adjacent grave date to the Bronze Age Kura-Araxes period (ca. 5000 years BP).

At first, we thought we might have found another house, but as excavations and research continued, we discovered none of the typical indicators of house - e.g. post-holes or domestic waste. So if the structure was not the basement of a house, what purpose did it serve?

The structure might have served as place for feastings or gatherings, as we uncovered a large hearth in the middle of the structure. Animal bones found near the structure underline that interpretation. Truly an outstanding and interesting discovery!

Adjacent to the structure we also found a burial, Grave 8. There, we uncovered the skeletal remains of an adult male and corresponding grave goods.
