More model informationI made a model of Earth, using Maya and Blender. It’s animated, and disassembles and assembles itself into dodecahedron and icosahedron shapes, which I find gives nice topologies for spheres and planets when subdivided.
I used some fun techniques on this model. Like adding a small repeating noise image for the AO, to act like a detail-map. I made a seperate shell with a alpha-mask for the landmasses, to give them clean detailed coasts. And the earth’s core appears to have a scrolling lava texture, but it’s basically a like doughnut that rotates in on it self, with a lot of deformers, and also a transparent outer-shell with a bump map and refraction, to stir up the lava appearance a bit more.
