Originally huge stone monuments and one of the most well-known cultural representations of Easter Island’s or Rapa Nui’s history, the moai commemorate tribal chiefs who excelled in their positions and deserved to be remembered for generations.
The statue was presented to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooporation (APEC) Secretariat by His Excellency Ricardo Lagos, President of the Republic of Chile during his official visit to Singapore on 1 May 2004. It currently sits at the entrance of the APEC Secretariat building at the National University of Singapore (Kent Ridge Campus). Photogrammetry captured with RealityScan.
This moai, measuring 1.62m and weighing 1.95tons, was sculpted from natural pink stone by renowned artist Alejandro Pakarati, a native of Rapa Nui. About 1,000 of the real Rapa Nui moai monuments, roughly 4.0m high and sculpted on rough hardened volcanic ash, remain on Easter Island.
