‘Eastshore Broch’ also known as ‘Brough Head’ and ‘Pool of Virkie’ is near the southern end of Shetland Mainland, just 250m north of the main runway at Sumburgh Airport. This broch has been badly eroded by the sea, effectely cutting it in half and emptying most of its middle. On the landward side are the remains of further prehistoric settlement with relatively modern ruined buildings on the top (some of which can be partly seen in the model). As brochs go, it is quite a nice site, there is a section cut through the outer wall, you can see the intramural gallery and scarcement, even paving stones on the floor. Within the broch are the remains of two radial piers that would have once been part of a wheelhouse, built during a later phase of the brochs use.
