More model informationEccentrocytes are the resultant of oxidant damage to erythrocytes. The cell membrane on opposite sides of the cell becomes stuck together, squeezing out the normal cell contents, most of which is haemoglobin. This leads to a paler crescent at the edge of the cell. This is why dogs and cats shouldn’t eat onions or garlic - alliums contain an oxidising chemical which dog and cat erythrocytes are particulary vulnerable to, unlike humans. The resulting damage causes anaemia.
