Petrified Wood (Tracheophyta)

72×38×44mm

Silurian – Present (425-0Ma)

Large land plants have to make may adaptations to survive on land. This wood has an outer bark, which acts like a skin to help prevent the plant from drying out, and has prominent tubes called vascular bundles which help to transport water and nutrients effectively all over the huge plant. This wood has been petrified, where it was covered in water with a lot of dissolved minerals, and when they crystallise inside the cells of the wood, it preserves the three-dimensional shape of the wood as a fossil.
