More model informationDating back to 1321-1322, this penny was minted in Canterbury under the reign of Edward II. The crowned bust of the King can just be made out on one side, with the inscription “EDWA R ANGL DNS HYB”. The reverse side read “CIVITAS CANTOR”.
Known as a long cross coin, this type of design was introduced in the 1200s to prevent coins being clipped for their silver.
The penny was found during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989-1991.
