Eduard Uhl’s grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery. Eduard Uhrl (1813-1892) was a lawyer and mayor of Vienna. From 1832 to 1840 he was a magistrate and then a private citizen. In 1848 he served as a captain in the National Guard and became a member of the Vienna City Council in 1861. Uhl was mayor from 1882 to 1889. During his term of office, Uhl was particularly committed to the fire and rescue services and the Viennese markets. In 1887, he and several local councillors founded the “Centralverein zur Beköstigung armer Schulkinder” (Central Association for feeding poor schoolchildren) to provide the poorest schoolchildren with a warm lunch during the winter months.
