August von Pettenkofen (1822-1889) was an Austrian painter, lithographer and caricaturist. Pettenkofen was one of the greatest Biedermeier genre painters of the monarchy. Besides scenes of Viennese folk life, he created numerous small-format soldier and village scenes. Particularly typical are depictions of Hungarian and Slovakian markets, farms and carts. In 1893 he received a joint honorary grave with Leopold Carl Müller at the Vienna Central Cemetery, designed by Viktor Tilgner.
