Access tower in Matzendorf. The access towers of the I. Vienna High Spring Pipeline were erected around 1873 as part of the pipeline construction. They are used to maintain, ventilate and monitor the water pipeline, which brings drinking water from the Alps to Vienna via a natural gradient. Technicians can use the towers to gain access to underground sections, allow air to escape or drain water if necessary. Many of the towers are built in the historicist style and are now listed buildings. They are not only functional, but also evidence of 19th century engineering. The I. High Spring Pipeline continues to reliably supply Vienna with high-quality spring water to this day.
