The interlaced bodies of two serpents form mats, held by two ladies, above and below a niche that contains the portrait of a dignitary. The serpents have flaming tails, and wear collars with knotted ties, which are commonplace in animal representations in Cotzumalhuapa art. The ladies wear skirts but no huipils, and large flower ornaments in the forehead. Serpentine mats were associated with kings in the Florentine Codex.
