Description: In the database, this specimen is an eleolite syenite, an old name for nepheline (from Gk. Elaion, oil; alluding to the mineral’s greasy luster). The sodalite is fluorescent under UV light (365 nm).
Foid-syenites are a group of phaneritic, holocrystalline feldspathoidal igneous rocks showing a great diversity of mineral compositions, e.g., alkali feldspar 35% to 80%, feldspathoids 10% to 45%, sodic-plagioclase 5% to 45%, and mafics 10% to 65%. This rock sample contains alkali-feldspar with sodalite, nepheline, titanite, and pyrite. The mafic minerals are represented by amphiboles.
