Elizabeth Beach soft sediment deformation3D Model
This outcrop of the Bluey’s Beach member of the Yagon Silstone is at the northern end of Elizabeth Beach (NSW, Australia). The sequence includes relatively shallow water turbidites and silstones deposited in a shelf environment of a forearc basin.
The sequence exhibits some spectacular examples of soft sediment deformation associated with slumping in a base-of-slope environment. A bedding-parallel glide layer consisting of severely disrupted sediments is near the base of this model (annotation 1) is about 40 cm thick. The glide layer (and other layers in the sequence) are in turn trucated by a large near-recumbent slump fold (annotations 2 & 3 mark the trace of the axial plane). Annotation 3 marks the flank of the slump. Note that the bedding underneath this axial plane is overturned (graded bedding is reversed).
Water bottle is 25 centimetres in height.
