Just north of Little Italy in New York City, resides a public garden with over 200 years of history, known as the Elizabeth Street Garden. It is the creation of original lease owner Allan Reiver, who ran an architectural salvage gallery adjacent to the garden, where he collected and displayed beautiful sculptures and other architectural rarities, leasing the land from the Department of Education. Now, it is fighting an eviction notice issued by the city, and is in danger of disappearing.
I was fortunate to be able to spend several days photographing and scanning this beautiful garden, and getting to know its story. I hope my scans will help preserve this place forever, and let people visit it in a virtual environment.
Visit ElizabethStreetGarden.com to learn more, and find out how you can get involved.
