More model informationAn elliptocyte is an elongated erythrocyte, sometimes called an ovalocyte, unless one end is more squashed in which case it is a dacrocyte. The characteristic disc shape of red blood cells is maintained by a strong but stretchy mesh of protein filaments lying under and attached to the plasma membrane. Genetic changes in these proteins can alter the structural stability and result in these cells that do not regain their circular shape after squeezing through microcapillaries.
