殻は薄く、前後に長い形状をしており、内側も外側も薄紫色をしている。貝の名前にある「スオウ(蘇芳色)」は黒みをおびた赤色のこと。河口汽水域の潮間帯の泥砂底に生息する。

The shell is thin and elongated front to back, with both the inner and outer surfaces a pale purple color. The “suō” (sappanwood color) in the shell’s name refers to a reddish-brown color. It inhabits muddy and sandy bottoms in the intertidal zone of estuarine brackish waters.
