More model informationThe emperor penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri Gray, 1844, is the largest and tallest Antarctic penguin.
The emperor penguin is the only penguin that rear its eggs during the Antarctic winter. These are incubated on males feet and kept warm thanks to the presence of a special brood pouch made by a flap of warm skin in the penguin belly. Thanks to this flap, eggs can be kept warm and safe even when outside temperature is -60 degrees °C. This egg is one of the several unhatched eggs that can be found in a penguin rookery ate the beginning of the Austral spring. an measure about 11 cm in lenght. This egg was collected in Cape Washington, one of the largest emperor penguin rookeries in the Ross Sea.
The chick specimen can be seen in this model.
