Enchanted Castle Cellar Excavations (Partial)3D Model
In 2023 Germanna Archaeology completed excavations within a cellar inside the foundation of the SW Dependency of the ca.1720 Enchanted Castle house. This dependency was a work area of the house and artifacts recovered from within the cellar suggest it was originally used for food storage or discard. The cellar is adjacent to the front of the fireplace - the base of the chimney can be seen from the top view. Looking inside the cellar at the wall profile you can see a thin burn/charcoal layer that is related to the burning of the house around 1750. Above the burn layer there is a thick deposit of rubble related to the collapse and demolition of the house after the fire. Below the burn layer is where most of the artifacts were recovered - including tens of thousands of animal bone fragments, ceramics, peach pits, corncobs, pipe stems, scissors, utensils, and more. These artifacts and this cellar are likely associated with workers at the house, including individuals who were enslaved and indentured servants.
